JUnit vs TestNG: Which Java Test Framework for CI?

JUnit is the JVM default and JUnit 5 closed much of the gap; TestNG still leans into flexible parallelism and data-driven tests.

JUnit 5 is the default choice with the broadest tooling, IDE, and build-plugin support, and it now offers parametrization and configurable parallelism. TestNG remains attractive for complex suites that need fine-grained parallel execution, test groups, and dependencies between tests. Both integrate cleanly with Maven and Gradle for CI reporting.

Speed and flakiness

Parallelize large suites (JUnit's parallel config or TestNG's thread settings) and retry transient failures so flakes do not fail builds. Long JVM test runs finish sooner on faster managed runners, and caching the build keeps setup short.

The verdict

Want the JVM standard with the widest support: JUnit 5. Need flexible parallelism, groups, and data-driven tests: TestNG. Both work well in Maven/Gradle CI - pick by the test features you actually use.
